Obituary

Dr. Sally Ann Hoover (Schuster), age 64, passed away in Pittsburgh on June 12, 2022 after fighting a brave battle against fallopian tube cancer.

Sally was born in Pittsburgh in 1957 to parents Dorothy and Vincent Schuster. She is survived by her husband John Hoover, daughter Katharine (Dave) Wanninger, son Joseph Kush, stepchildren Brian Hoover and Julia (Kyle) Ehlis, sister Susan Schuster, brother Mike (Elizabeth) Schuster and their children Zachary, Isabella and Maximus and niece Lyndsay Schuster. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother David Schuster and nephew Adam Schuster.

Sally grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She began a life of service to others as a teenager, working at St. Francis Hospital. After high school, she attended Duquesne University's College of Education. Sally completed her PhD at the Arizona State University School of Psychology. She worked at Mesa Public schools as a part time school psychologist while finishing her Doctorate degree.

Upon graduating, she began working at Phoenix Children's Hospital as a child psychologist. In 1994, Sally moved back to Pittsburgh and began her 25-year career at Quaker Valley School District, where she retired from in 2019 as Director of Pupil Services. She was a tenacious advocate, defender, and champion for the children she worked with, and her impact was felt by so many families.

Sally was married to the love of her life, John, for fifteen years before she passed. They lived a life of adventure, playing tennis, cycling, and running and traveling to their favorite spots like Hilton Head and Arizona. Sally's friends and family describe her as generous, spirited, forgiving, steadfast, confident, and empathetic. She was an excellent listener and was always able to find common ground with those she met. No one mistook her empathy for weakness though--she was also fierce and no- nonsense. She demanded that her colleagues, friends, and family believed in themselves as much as she did.

Despite a doctorate degree, countless career achievements and a life full of beautiful friendships, Sally's proudest accomplishment was being a mother to her children, Katharine and Joseph, whom she loved more than life. Her passion for education and psychology lives on in their work. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her spirit will endure through all of those whose lives she has touched.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 19th from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at Eloise B. Kyper Funeral Home at 2702 Mt. Royal Blvd., Glenshaw, PA. A memorial service will be held at the same location on Monday, June 20th at 10am.
