Robert Kanish, 89, of Ford City, passed away at his home on Thursday, June 25, 2026.Born on March 18, 1937, in Furnace Run, Robert was the son of the late George and Anna (Larko) Kanish. A naturally gifted athlete, he played football and baseball throughout high school. He continued playing baseball during his service in the U.S. Army, attracting the attention of at least one major league scout.In 1964, Robert moved to New Jersey with his brother and worked for National Starch and Chemical for more than 30 years.Robert married Dorothy (Reesman) Kanish in June 1966, and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary just one week before his passing. He continued to pursue his love of sports, playing in softball and bowling leagues and enjoying golf during the summer.Robert had a mischievous sense of humor and a hearty laugh that could fill a room. Behind his boisterous laugh and tough exterior, however, was a kind and compassionate heart. Stories about children in need could bring him to tears.

He also had a deep love of music, especially classic country and bluegrass.Robert is survived by his children, Sherry (Jack) Tomaro of Lower Mount Bethel, PA, and Robert (Angela) Kanish of Jackson, TN; his granddaughter, Krista (Kenneth) Gabel of Saylorsburg, PA; his grandson, Dereck (Tessa) Tomaro of Tampa, FL; and his great-grandsons, Theodore and Desmond Gabel of Saylorsburg, PA. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Mylarnski, Kathy Grafton, and Anna Kanish; seven brothers, Paul, Mike, Louis, Steve, George, Joseph, and John; and his parents-in-law, George and Verda Reesman.Family and friends are invited to Robert's memorial service at Furnace Run Chapel, 154 Montgomery Road, Kittanning, PA 16201, on Friday, August 21, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., with the Reverend Jimmy Edwards officiating. Everyone please meet at church for the memorial service. 

Robert will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
