March 4, 1936 – December 1, 2022
Richard Rowland Chene Sr. passed December 1 st at Concordia Rebecca of covid complications. Born in Oakland Pittsburgh March 4 th , 1936, Richard lived in Blawnox, PA.
Richard drove several passions: First since 1963 he was deeply involved in the Chef Association of Pittsburgh, serving as President, Treasurer and Chairman Emeritus. In 2001 Richard was named Chef of the Year. Richard's father Lucien was one the five founders of the organization in 1948.
Richard also had a passion for antique cars owning 9 older vehicles including a prized '57 Chevy, '48 Mercury and a '35 Ford Phantom. He served as President of the V8 Club and was member of T-bird and North Hills Historic Auto Club
He began his career as a Pastry Chef for the Duquesne Club, having made desserts for US Presidents and many dignitaries. He also created at the Everglades Club in Palm Beach FLA and Sun & Surf Club in NYC. Richard reached nationwide recognition with his unmatched skills as an Ice Sculpturer throughout the 60s thru 80's. In 1969 he along with his wife Alice, ran the Wine Cellar Restaurant until 1986, One of Pittsburgh's finest steak and seafood restaurants. Later in Life, Richard earned a teaching degree from Univ. of Pittsburgh providing inspiration to countless aspiring chefs.
He is survived by his beloved wife Alice, "Eddy Kay" (Jindra) Chene, his Son Richard; loving sister Jaqueline "Jackie" (Chene) Nichols. Four Grandchildren, Four Nieces, and a wide group of friends. He is preceded in death by his father Lucien Chene and mother Rose (Rich) Carraux and sister Janet Chene.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 4, 2022 at Kyper Funeral Home on Mt Royal Blvd. Glenshaw, PA from 12:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m with a Funeral Catholic Mass immediately following at 4p.m in the funeral home chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Chef Association of Pittsburgh to help young chefs.
