Grandfather of Catherine Frank, Paul E. Smith III, Lisa Lawry, David Smith, Marion Stitt, Matthew D. Smith, Tracy Smith, Will Smith, Jackie Smith, Jennifer Lowe, Renae Fossum, Amanda Donovan and Will Donovan.
Great-grandfather of Michael, Jessie, Bobby, Ashley, Sami, Megan, Ian, Emily and (unborn) Baby Fossum.
He served in the Army Air Force in WWII. He was a decorated war veteran and prisoner of war. He was Congressionally awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart.
