Dr. Josefina Candelaria Ricasa, age 80, of Glenshaw, PA, passed away peacefully Friday, February 24, 2023 with her husband and two daughters at her bedside at UPMC St. Margaret Hospital. She was born March 19, 1942 in San Miguel, Bulacan, Philippines, and was the eldest daughter to parents, Jesus Tecson Candelaria and Florencia Maniquis Candelaria of Calamba, Laguna, Philippines.
Josie graduated from the Far Eastern University Institute of Medicine in Manila in 1965, and then completed several years of post-graduate training in the OB/GYN department of Far Eastern University. In Pittsburgh, PA Josie served her internship at St. Margaret's Memorial Hospital from 1969 to 1970, and her residency at Mercy Hospital from 1970 to 1973.
Josie & Oscar were married on January 10th, 1972 in Baguio, Philippines during Josie's holiday vacation. In early 1973, Josie & Oscar welcomed their first daughter, Emily. Later that same year, Josie joined the St. Margaret's Memorial Hospital Medical Education Department as the Director of Obstetrical & Gynecologic Education. In 1981, Josie & Oscar welcomed their second daughter, Joy.
Josie gracefully juggled her practice of medicine, her teaching of residents and her mothering of her two daughters for 35 years until her retirement in 2008. Following her retirement, Josie focused on spending time with her friends and family and being the best Nana to her four grandchildren.
Josie is survived by her brother, Florante Maniquis Candelaria; and her two sisters, Dionisia Maniquis Candelaria and Paulina Candelaria Alejandro; as well as her loving husband of 51 years, Oscar Cabanatan Ricasa; and her two beloved daughters, Florence Emily Ricasa-Schmitt (spouse Jordan Asher Schmitt) and Dr. Jocelyn (Joy) Candelaria Ricasa (spouse Joseph Daniel Legradi). Josie also leaves behind her four adoring grandchildren, Nathan Oscar and Eric Thomas Schmitt, and Josephine (Josie) Anne and Jason John (JJ) Legradi.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 1 , 2023 from 1-3p.m and 5-7p.m at Eloise B. Kyper Funeral Home, Inc. 2702 Mt Royal Blvd. Glenshaw, PA 15116 . A Funeral Mass will be held the following day, March 2, 2023 at 10a.m at St. Mary Church, Christ the King Parish, located at 210 Garnier St. Pittsburgh, 15215 . EVERYONE, PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH.
