John Luteran , 93 years old , passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on March 23 , 2021 . John was preceded in death by his granddaughter , Stacey Luteran , on February 22 , 2021 . Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 72 years Helen Luteran . He is survived by all of his five children , Deborah ( J . B . Barentine ) Iwanys h yn , Susan Luteran , John (Kathleen ) Luteran , Cynthia ( Terry ) Johnson , Laura ( Bill ) Long , five grandchildren & three great grandchildren .

John grew up in the Manchester area of Pittsburgh and before he ever graduated high school , he joined the Navy Seabees at the age of 17 in 1945 . After his tour he came home and met his wonderful wife at a dance and they w ere married on August 7 , 1948 .

John was the classic example of a true entrepreneur. He took over his father ' s trucking business , Luteran Trucking Inc . when his father died at a young age . While raising a family of five children , a good portion of his life was working two jobs , ha u ling scrap for Rosedale Foundry during the day and working as a guard at Western Penitentiary at night . In the early 1960 ' s he was the owner of a Mobile and Gulf gasoline service statio n s on opposite corners of California Avenue in the North Side of Pittsburgh , checking the oil and cleaning the windshield of every customer that he did business with .

He was never afraid of taking on a business challenge and spent many years in the Foundry business as owner of Shafer - Goodnow Foundry and Springfield Casting Company . In 1978 his life changed when he stopped for a case of beer for Christmas and met the owner of the Schmidt ' s beer wholesale distributorship and said " If you e v er want to sell this place , let me know " . By August of 1979 he had sold his partnership in the foundry and was in the wholesale beer business called Allegheny Valley Beer Dist in the Lawrenceville area of Pittsburgh . He went from dirty work uniforms to a suit and tie business and he flourished . Throughout all of his business endeavors , Helen was by his side working as secretary and bookkeeper . They then sold their property and business in 1987 and retired to Florida at the age of 60 .

Semi - retired in 1985 he took on the project of building their own retirement home r i ght next to the driving range of Delray Beach Country Club . They became avid members of the golf club and the American German Club of the Palm Beaches where they spent many years volunteering, dancing , singing and making wonderful memories .

At the age of 70 , John ' s deep rooted work ethic surfaced again and he went back to work driving a bus for the Manor Care Nursing Facility and Hyatt Corporation Assisted Living Facility taking other elderly people to doctor ' s appointments . John and Helen loved dancing and enjoyed going on cruises of the Caribbean Islands and it was never a surprise for John to join the band and sing some of their favorite songs .

They returned to Pittsburgh in 2019 to live with their daughter Cynthia and son - in - law Terry Johnson in Cranberry Township where he peacefully joined The Lord in Heaven passing away in his own bed with his family by his side .

Friends will be received at the Eloise B . Kype r Funeral Home , 2702 Mt Royal Blvd . , Glenshaw , PA on Monday March 29 , 2021 from 2 : 00 - 4 : 00 PM and 6 : 00 - 8 : 00 PM . The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday , March 30 , 202 1 at 11 : 00 AM in the Funeral Home Chapel . Interment will be held at Allegheny County Memorial Park , Allison Park , PA where Military Honors will be accorded .
