Obituary

Douglas Vincent Trew

(November 15, 1919 – November 15, 2021)

Douglas Vincent Trew, 102, of Mars, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2021, in his home surrounded by his family.

He led a rich life, humbly loving God, his wife, family, and community.

On November 15, 1919, Douglas was born to Philip Stanley Trew and Dora Amelia Kale Trew in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in difficult times, just after the end of World War One and during the worldwide Spanish flu pandemic. He spent his childhood in Cheswick, Pennsylvania, with his older sister and brother, Virginia and Gordon, and his younger sisters, Dorothy and Phyllis.   His formative years included the Great Depression.  Like all of his generation, he was grateful and appreciative of all that came later.

In 1941 Doug met and married his beloved wife, Lulu "Lula" Madeline Armstrong.  Together they spent 50 wonderful years until her passing in 1991. Together he and Lulu were blessed with three daughters and one son.  In raising his family, he led by way of example.  Doug possessed an easygoing manner, a well-honed intellect, and a calming spirit. He gave all who knew him a sense of wonder, excitement, and encouragement.  He could make you laugh, and he brought people into his orbit by showing appreciation, love, and respect.

Doug attended Springdale High School and excelled in academics.  He participated in Boy Scouts achieving the Order of the Arrow, and was an active and faithful member of the Cheswick Presbyterian Church.  Doug began his collegiate career at Slippery Rock University and completed his B.S. degree in Chemistry in the first graduating class of McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana.  He later culminated his academic journey with a Master's Degree in Environmental Science from McNeese State University.

He began his career as a chemist at the Shell Laboratory in Cheswick. As part of the national war effort, he accepted employment with the Cities Service Company in Lake Charles, Louisiana. He was part of a group from the northeast willing to move to Lake Charles where he produced aviation gasoline for the war effort.

A devoted member of the Methodist Church, he served as a lay minister, Sunday School teacher, choir member, and elder.

His long life was a blessing to all who came to know him, love him, and now share in his legacy.  The entire Trew family will forever be grateful for Douglas's life and love and the condolences of our friends and neighbors.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Lulu Armstrong Trew; parents, Philip and Dora Trew; brother, Gordon Trew; sisters, Virginia Adams, Dorothy Hostetler and Phyllis Straw.  He is survived by daughters, Karen Cantu, Marcia Trew, Joyce Trew, all of Pittsburgh and his son, Philip Trew (Sandy) of Beaumont, Texas; 9 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and their families.

The family will hold a graveside service at Allegheny County Memorial Park Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 19, 2021.  Rev. David Streets will officiate.
